Since opening our doors in 2008, our aim has been to provide a large selection of wools and yarns for the discerning knitter and crocheter. Our selection includes Skeins own hand-dyed yarns, Sirdar, King Cole, Bergere de France yarns and supporting patterns. We also stock Knit Pro needles and sets, as well as a range of other tools and books to assist you in your knitting adventures.
Based on Glossop High Street, in North Derbyshire, the studio is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 3pm. You are also welcome to call in Wednesday evenings between 7pm and 9pm when the Knit’n'Natter group is on.
The darker nights and colder weather always makes people want to stop in, get cosy, put the TV on and knit! Skeins has been very busy over the last few months with many lapsed knitters returning to the fold and taking up knitting again – many making presents for Christmas – there is still time to get something made especially if you choose something in a thicker yarn!
2014 – what’s in store?
This winter seems to be the season for some fairly sparkly types of yarn with Sirdar Giselle – an Aran weight yarn with a bronze coloured slub and some lovely patterns to support it. King Cole have both Tinsel – which is exactly what it looked like and as a chunky weight knits very quickly into scarves and cowls plus Shine DK which comes in 5 colourways and also has good patterns to support it – although quite sparkly this would also make nice garments for the summer season.
After the popularity of the Sunday Mini Workshops these will again be run in the New Year with sessions including Basic Knitting, Aran Knitting – for those who are unsure on cabling techniques, sewing up – how to get a professional look to your projects, plus picking up stitches – something that a lot of knitters put off! Full details of all the workshops are on the website – places need to be booked.
There seems to be quite a few spinners in the area who have voiced about the lack of somewhere where they can meet other spinners on an informal/ regular basis. Spinning Sundays will be a regular meeting for anyone to bring their wheels to sit and spin and natter with other spinners. There won’t be a ‘teacher’ however hopefully it will be somewhere where techniques can be shared etc. The studio will open on these Sundays from 10 -3pm and anyone is welcome to drop in at times to suit them. Each session is £2.00 to cover drinks etc. Hopefully if there is enough interest in a particular technique a tutor can be sourced and invited to come and teach etc. If you are interested please contact the studio.
These sessions continue to be popular and both the Wednesday evening ( 7-9pm) and the Thursday afternoon(1-3pm) are open to all abilities of knitters and crocheters. The cost is £1.50 which includes drinks and biscuits. There is no need to book – just turn up with your latest project. If you are stuck then there is always help on hand.
Skeins would like to thank all its customers – many of whom are more like friends- for their continued support over the past year and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year. Thank you.
